Volterra, the Tuscan town shortlisted as Italian Capital of Culture

Visiting Volterra for the first time is always a unique and unforgettable experience. Surrounded by the green Tuscan countryside, this town of Etruscan origin is an ancient jewel full of charm and places to see.

At the beginning of the 1900s, Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio described the view of Volterra with the following words:

Behind a bald hill of chalky marl, on the summit of the mountain as on the brink of a Dantean circle, suddenly appeared the long walled and turreted lineament

Volterra is a fascinating town made of stone and surrounded by circular medieval walls. Its excellent historical center is full of picturesque narrow streets and quaint alleys, scattered with numerous stores of alabaster craftsmen, typical processing of the place.

There are also many unmissable attractions. From the magnificent Palazzo dei Priori, which overlooks the homonymous square, to the Medici Fortress. From the Roman Theatre to the extraordinary art gallery, where you can admire the famous Deposition from the Cross painted by Rosso Fiorentino.

The candidature as Italian Capital of Culture 2022

For the countless historical and artistic beauties that have been distinguishing it for more than 30 thousand years, Volterra was also one of the finalists to become the Italian Capital of Culture in 2022.

The candidacy project - called Human Re-generation - was an opportunity to return to enhance this city's historical and cultural heritage, which encloses two souls: one Etruscan and the other medieval.

The regeneration project involved not only the town of Volterra but also its surrounding villages. This Tuscan area, in fact, prides itself on being the birthplace of musicians, painters, sculptors, directors, doctors, and scientists of national and international value, such as Boccaccio and Carducci.

Experience the ancient charm of the city of Volterra, book a stay at Hotel Casolare Terre Rosse, a characteristic country hotel nestled in the beautiful Tuscan hills.
