Medieval re-enactment in Volterra

A double unmissable appointment arrives in Volterra. On Sunday 14 and Sunday 21 August the fascinating medieval re-enactment takes place.

Ready for a leap through the centuries? Do not miss the special event in one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany, easily reachable from Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse.

Welcome back to the Middle Ages

Court ladies, noble knights, commoners, musicians and jugglers: they will be the ones to welcome you in Tuscany of the fourteenth century, precisely in 1398.

Every year, on the second and third Sunday of August, the historic center of Volterra and the Parco di Castello celebrate Tuscany of the past with music, markets, games, food and dancing.

The event, named "Volterra AD 1398", ferries the viewer in medieval times since their arrival in the town. At the beginning of the village it is in fact possible to exchange money in Euros with the Grosso, a copper or gold coin available at the Exchange Office. With the old coin you can buy everything that the stalls offer, from gastronomic delicacies to the works of artisans.

For lovers of medieval festivals and good food, the unmissable appointment is set at dinner time. Both Sundays, the promoters of the event organize a banquet, with a menu created ad hoc based on traditional dishes linked to the territory.

Throughout the streets of the village, during the entire duration of the event, in addition to browsing among the stalls of artisans and merchants, you will see nobles and commoners pass by and you will witness the valuable performances of the jugglers

In the Castle Park, located at the foot of the imposing Medici Fortress, there are ladies and knights in the company of flag-wavers and crossbowmen, who perform in parades and knightly jousting. In the background, musicians of yesteryear cheer the audience by spreading a pleasant sound throughout the park.

The ideal place to relive the Middle Ages

Volterra is the ideal setting for a historical and cultural re-enactment. The medieval festival is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the long-standing history of the town.

Of medieval origin, it is surrounded by walls, which once stood to protect the urban settlement.

In the center stands Palazzo dei Priori, with splendid medieval frescoes and a graceful bell tower from which you can admire a beautiful panorama.

Access the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) through a graceful marble portal; inside, you will be speechless in front of the beauty of the gilded coffered ceiling.

Also worth visiting is the complex of the Roman Theater, which houses the ruins of thermal baths dating back to the third century.

For archeology enthusiasts, the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum houses a rich collection of archaeological finds of inestimable value.

Finally, do not miss the Medici Fortress, built between 1342 and 1474 on the highest point of the hill where the town stands.

Don't miss one of the most anticipated parties in all of Tuscany. Take part in the medieval festival and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Volterra: book your stay at Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse now.
