The Palio of Siena is a competition between the Contrade di Siena in the form of an equestrian carousel of medieval origin.
The “career”, as it is traditionally called the race, normally takes place twice a year: on July 2, the Palio in honor of the Madonna di Provenzano is celebrated in the extraordinary form of the Visitation, and on August 16 that in honor of the Madonna Assunta.
Ten Contrade on 17 run the Palio of July 2, the seven that did not run the Palio in July of the previous year to which they are added three drawn among the ten that ran him.
The 10 Contrade participate in the race of the Palio with a horse that is assigned to them by drawing lots from a selection of horses selected among those physically fit.
On the day of the Palio, before the actual race, Siena is crossed by the traditional parade where the authorities, knights and contradaioli parade, all rigorously in traditional costumes of the time. Here each district shows off its banners, its banners and its colors of belonging.
The race ends after three laps (about 1000 meters). The official winner is the horse, since it can also cross the finish line without the jockey. At the end of the race, all the Contrade are still to celebrate the big day!
